City and nature

A gnarled tree, a shimmering sea, a mountain range bathed in the soft evening light. Or: a quiet road, a lively square, a stunning city skyline. Do you know places that are not just a backdrop, but claim centre stage? Whoever manages to capture that special magic has good chances of winning.

"The land of poets", as Portugal is often called, is the westernmost country in Europe and has around 11 million inhabitants. In addition to the mainland on the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal includes the archipelagos of the Azores and Madeira. The mainland coastline has a length of 832 km, which explains the Portuguese passion for shipping. In the course of history, Portugal attracted a mix of peoples like the Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans, but also Nordic and Arabic tribes. Each of these has left its mark. For example "Azulejos" - as the famous painted tiles on building facades, benches and tables are known - owe their origins to the Arab world. The mix of traditions is reflected again in the cuisine and culture of Portugal. One of the most popular forms of music is the "Fado" - a melancholy song with guitar accompaniment.
